A solidly built farmer from the Greytown club, Udy played as a hooker in the 2-3-2 scrum formation. Between 1894 and 1904 he played for Wairarapa in 49 matches, a considerable number in view of the limited number of provincial fixtures a century ago.

He played for New Zealand firstly in 1901, in the practice match against Wellington and then in the unofficial test against the New South Wales tourists a few days later. He scored one of New Zealand’s tries in the 20-3 win.

Two years later he played for the North in the interisland match and after swapping to the Wellington provincial selection for the preliminary match against New Zealand went on the 1903 tour of Australia.

Udy played in seven of the matches, including the first official test played by New Zealand against Australia in Sydney. Though playing a full season for Wairarapa in 1904 he was not required for the test against Great Britain, the first played in New Zealand.

Several of the relatives and descendants of Dan and Hart Udy appeared in representative matches, either for Wairarapa or Bush, up until recent years.
